Chiang Rai is a smaller city in terms of population, but its main tourist sites are rather spread out. To explore the city comfortably and with a flexible schedule, it’s a good idea to rent a car in Chiang Rai.
Thankfully, Drive Car Rental has a convenient location at Chiang Rai International Airport. We offer a wide selection of vehicles, including electric options. We also have long-term rentals for business travellers or those who decide to stay for a while!
The most popular sites to see in Chiang Rai are the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), and the Black Temple (Baan Dam Museum). The city also has a charming downtown area and several parks.
The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)
The city’s most famous landmark, the White Temple, is the primary reason tourists visit Chiang Rai. Unlike many of Thailand’s famous Buddhist temples, the White Temple is rather new. Construction of the primary temple building was finished in 1997, and ongoing work continues across the temple grounds. Visitors who come every few years are likely to see new buildings and displays each time they come.
Another striking feature of the White Temple is its unique artistry and sculptural work. This is because, rather than being constructed in the traditional style, the temple was designed by the nationally recognized Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat.
Before the new temple was constructed, an older temple sat on the same site. By the mid-1990s, it was in a state of disrepair and was demolished. With funds to build a new temple lacking, Chalermchai stepped in and announced he would design and construct it with his own money. What he created has become a national icon.
While the outside of the temple is arguably one of the most photographed in all of Thailand, photos of the interior are strictly prohibited. This adds to the mystery of the temple and the curiosity visitors feel as they walk over the gleaming white bridge that leads to the entrance.
The Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten)
On the north side of the river that flows from downtown Chiang Rai sits the Blue Temple. Much like the White Temple, it is constructed on the site of an older temple that is long gone. Construction of the main temple building began in 2005 and was completed in 2015.
Outside of the main building are spectacular sculptures of mythical creatures, gods, goddesses, and spirits from Buddhism and Thai mythology. New sculptures continue to be constructed today, and visitors can expect to see at least one half-finished sculpture during their visit. All of these sculptures will be painted in a blue palette to conform to the temple’s overall aesthetic.
The spectacular nature of the Blue Temple is no surprise, as it was designed by a protégé of the artist who constructed the White Temple. Many who see it say that it is equal to the White Temple in its beauty.
The Black Temple (Baan Dam Museum)
While the Blue and White Temples are functioning temples of worship, the Black Temple is not. Another nationally recognized artist, Thawan Duchanee, is responsible for its construction. It covers a large area of land and consists of several unique buildings designed by the artist himself.
Some buildings are open to the public and others are not. Many of the museum’s buildings feature skeletons, skulls, and skins of various wildlife the artist collected over the years. In some, they are simply decoration; in others, whole pieces of furniture are constructed from nothing but the bones and horns of animals.
