How far is Ubon Ratchathani from Bangkok? The distance is around 600 kilometres and takes eight to ten hours. Once in town, what is there to do? Don’t worry, we have a list to satisfy everyone–let’s dive in.
For Nature Lovers
On the northern edge of the city is the Ubon Wanarom Arboretum, which locals will tell you is a hidden gem. Flowers of all kinds bloom year-round, and if you’re lucky, you’ll see some of the park’s red squirrel friends running around.
Lounge in the shade and grab a Thai tea before heading off to the nearby Ban Kan Lueang Archaeological Site. Here, visitors can see evidence of the region’s history dating back thousands of years. Pottery, jewellery, and tools are all on display. These represent just a tiny percentage of what lies beneath the soil all around the area.
To the east of the city are Kaeng Tana National Park and Pha Taem National Park. At Kaeng Tana, the experience can differ greatly, depending on the season. In the rainy season, the area becomes famous for its rapids and white water. In the dry season, these same rapids dry out almost completely, and the river bottom becomes visible. Unusually shaped holes caused by water erosion give one the impression of walking on the moon.
Pha Taem National Park sits on the border of Thailand and Cambodia and offers views of the mighty Mekong River. The entire area is elevated and contains a steep drop at the river’s edge. Soi Sawan Waterfall, located near the park’s entrance, is the perfect opening act to this geological wonder. Those interested in long-gone civilizations can also see artwork immortalised in rock paintings.
Before heading back to town, be sure and visit Wat Sirindhorn Wararam just before sunset. After dark, an already stunning mural and surrounding grounds light up due to glow-in-the-dark paint.
Cultural Sites in and Around the City
No visit to Ubon Ratchathani is complete without seeing Wat Phra That Nong Bua. Its towering white chedi can be seen from all over town. Built to resemble the Mahabodhi temple in India where the Buddha gained enlightenment, it is arguably the city’s most famous landmark.
Next is Wat Thung Si Muang. This unassuming temple has two unique features. First is the wooden scroll house built above the pond–in times past, temples kept their most sacred scrolls in raised library buildings to keep them safe from rainy season floods.
The other point of interest might not be recognized by foreigners. It is a large footprint-shaped relic, which marks a spot where legends say the Buddha himself visited during his many journeys around Southeast Asia. These sacred footprints can be found scattered all throughout Thailand’s temples and serve as a reminder of its Buddhist heritage.
After seeing the sites, most tourists are hungry and wonder where to eat in Ubon Ratchathani. First stop is to try Porntip Gai Yang Wat Jaeng. This well-known lunch spot for locals specialises in Som Tam (papaya salad), grilled chicken, and other regional specialties.
