Koh Samui is the largest of the three main islands in the Chumphon Archipelago, located just north of the southern peninsula of Thailand. The Koh Samui Ferry to Koh Phangan also provides trips to the mainland and the diving resort island of Koh Tao. Ferries are the most common way to reach the island and they run regularly each day.
Koh Samui may look small on the map, but it is deceptively large. This is because most roads between cities run around the outside of the island, and the central part of the island is a mountainous jungle. Therefore, the most budget-friendly way to get around is a Koh Samui car rental from Drive Car Rental. Our desk is located inside Koh Samui Airport.
Once you’ve had enough fun on Koh Samui, you might want to experience the other islands that can be reached only by ferry. Below are some details on ferries, ports of call, and some tips and tricks that will help you make the most of your adventure.
Where to Find the Ferry
The main ferry port on Koh Samui is on the west side, in the port town of Nathon. Here, ships of all kinds regularly dock to unload passengers and supplies. A second ferry port is located on the northeast side, near the airport.
The two primary ferry companies are Seatran and Lomprayah. Lomprayah operates out of Nathon, and Seatran runs out of the northeast port. Lomprayah is the premium, faster option, providing a double-hulled catamaran designed to minimise wave motion. The Seatran ferry is more traditional, but can also carry vehicles that Lomprayah cannot.
Other small, local ferries also run between the islands and the mainland. They are slower and cost less. Be sure to ask the ticketing agent about times and locations to ensure a stress-free trip.
Please note that, depending on sea conditions, ferries may be cancelled or delayed. Plan accordingly and ask ferry agents to confirm that the ferries are running on time. A small delay is normal in Thailand. Find some shade under a nearby banyan tree in Koh Samui, and enjoy a fruit shake while you wait!
Koh Phangan and Beyond
Koh Phangan is around thirty minutes to one hour away, depending on the ship and sea conditions. The Lomprayah ferry services Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and the mainland.
Koh Phangan itself is a bit smaller than Koh Samui and less developed. There are a plethora of quiet beach towns and secluded areas to relax and unwind. Like Samui, the island is mostly mountainous jungle. Be sure and hit the popular beaches at night for seaside dining, entertainment, and must-see fire shows.
The ferry port on Koh Phangan is home to Thong Sala, located on the southwest side of the island. Here, visitors can find supermarkets, shops, and restaurants of all kinds. The other cities and towns on the island have fewer conveniences, but far more charm. Grab what you need and head out to see the rest of the island.
Travelers who stay on the ferry after it departs from Koh Phangan will next head to Koh Tao, another hour to the north. This tiny island is only seven kilometres long but has more dive resorts per capita than almost anywhere in the world. It also boasts some of the cheapest diving on earth, making it a great place to get certified!
