Games or Concerts?
Thunder Dome Stadium
This is the home of Muangthong United Football Club, a League 1 team in Thai football. The top sixteen teams in the league compete regularly for the championship title.
Like many football clubs around the world, not all of the players are from Thailand. Championship and Premier League players have played for Muangthong United in the past, and foreign coaches and support staff are regularly seen on the sidelines guiding the team to victory.
Muang Thong Thani Thunder Dome Stadium was constructed in 1998 and expanded when the team grew in 2009. It has a seating capacity of 15,000, which makes it the fourth-largest football stadium in Thailand. Thais take their football very seriously, and national matches held here often attract sell-out crowds.
Thunder Dome Arena
As part of the same complex, Thunder Dome Arena provides a covered indoor concert venue. World-famous acts such as Guns N’ Roses and others have played to sold-out audiences here. The seating capacity varies by layout, but is around 5,000 to 7,000. It is a smaller venue than the nearby Impact Arena, but it provides a more intimate experience often missing at larger concert halls.
Concert calendars for the arena and events can be found online. Check showtimes and availability in advance and catch a show if possible. Tickets can also be booked online in advance.
Elsewhere in Northern Bangkok
Located close to Don Mueang Airport, this area is host to a variety of convention halls, concert centres, and shopping complexes. It also contains several museums. Here are some of the more popular options:
Impact Arena and Exhibition Hall
Large conventions, typically focused on Asia-based guests, are held here almost every weekend. Comic conventions, chocolate exhibitions, and everything in between have been hosted here. Check the exhibition hall’s calendar to see if something lines up with your upcoming trip to Bangkok.
Museum of Contemporary Art
Opened by a billionaire telecom tycoon, this museum holds world-class contemporary Thai art. Modern works from Thailand’s most famous artists are on display over five floors. Lovers of surrealism and spiritually themed art will be especially pleased.
Traveling modern art exhibitions from the likes of Banksy and others are also shown here on a rotating schedule.
Royal Thai Air Force Museum
This unique museum is located on the opposite side of Don Mueang Airport. It’s a smaller aviation museum and it has several standout aircraft. Many of the machines on display are rare or one-of-a-kind prototypes.
Wat Don Mueang
This royal temple is across the highway from Don Mueang Airport. See our article on Wat Don Mueang temple travel tips for additional information on this unique and sacred place, built in 1895.
