The festival events calendar in Thailand is always full. The water festival of Songkran and the fall lantern festival, known as ‘Loy Krathong,’ are the dominant national festivals. Khon Kaen, in particular, has its own famous festivals such as the Isan Creative Festival, the Silk Festival, and the Flower Festival.

January to April

Thailand’s dry season, from November to April, is famous for its flowers. While flowers are abundant no matter the season, the dry season has especially vibrant colors as entire trees turn orange, yellow, and purple. 

The Flower Festival 

From late December until the middle of January, the city holds its annual flower festival. Here, visitors can see hundreds of flower species artfully arranged into incredible carpets of colour. Songkran (April)

April and May are the hottest months in Thailand. With temperatures regularly topping 38°C, locals need a way to cool down. Fortunately, April often brings the first rain showers of the rainy season. 

To celebrate the return of the rains, cities across Thailand hold the Songkran festival. There is no other way to say it: the entire country becomes one giant water fight. Squirt guns, buckets of water, hoses, and even ice water are all on the menu. 

Anyone caught outside during the festival can expect to be completely soaked by the time they return home for the evening. Grab a water gun at a local store and head out for some fun. 

May to August

This is the heart of the rainy season for much of Thailand. Still, it doesn’t rain all day, every day, just a few times a day for twenty minutes or so. This means there is still plenty to do. 

Isan Creative Festival (Late June to Early July)

This is Khon Kaen’s largest art and music festival. Local musicians and artisans descend upon the city each year to show off their latest creations. 

Ancient Thai culture is often blended with modern concepts to create striking visual displays. There is live music, street performers, a huge food selection, and tons of art stalls displaying and selling everything imaginable. 

September to December

This period marks the transition from the rainy season into the dry season. It also coincides with the start of the tourist high season from November to April. 

Loy Krathong (November)

This is Thailand’s moment to shine. Each November, millions of people attend local Loy Krathong festivals. This festival is meant to celebrate the annual rice harvest that occurs around this time. 

Locals and tourists alike launch beautiful paper sky lanterns powered by flaming wax high into the sky. They also find the nearest river or lake and make a Krathong, a piece of a banana tree stalk that has been decorated with flowers and candles and is sent floating down the river. According to legend, you can send negative energy or unwanted thoughts with it as it floats away. 

Silk Festival (Late November to Early December)

Thailand is world-renowned for its rough-spun silk. This is the same silk that is sold across Asia. The difference is that Thai silk is made and spun by hand rather than by a machine. This creates a texture that feels somewhat similar to wool. 

During the Silk Festival, thousands of the best weavers from across Eastern Thailand come to Khon Kaen with their finest products. They aren’t just for sale. Competitions are held annually for the best design, texture, new concepts, and other categories.
